We Were Not Made for Algorithms

Algorithms are getting very good at predicting what we want to watch, read, and listen to. They know what videos will keep us scrolling, what products we might buy, and even what kind of music fits our mood.

But they are terrible at helping us feel known.

And honestly, I think a lot of people are starting to feel that.

We are more connected than ever, yet many people feel increasingly isolated. We consume endless content, but still long for real conversation. We can gather information instantly, but formation still takes time, presence, and relationships.

That is part of why the church still matters. The church gathers people around tables, conversations, prayer, worship, and shared life.

We are not formed online alone. We still need real people, real relationships, and shared experiences.

Over the last five years, our church family has been part of helping form Pastor Boston for ministry. And now, as she prepares to become the pastor of her own church, we are both celebrating and a little sad. That is part of what a healthy community does. We grow together. We encourage one another. And eventually, we send people forward into new seasons of life and ministry.

Mark your calendars. We will celebrate and send Pastor Boston and her family on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

Then, beginning June 28, we are creating space for more of that kind of connection through a six-week gathering called We Are All In This Together. It will happen at 9 a.m. before our 10 a.m. Sunday worship. Different generations learning together. Conversations. Relationships. Shared experiences. Not because the church needs another program, but because people still need community.

We were not created merely to consume content. We were created to know and be known. I hope you will make plans to join us in this very special summer experiment.

With Gratitude,

Rev. Rodney Whitfield
Senior Pastor
Aldersgate UMC
