More Than Comic Book Power

It is VBS week at Aldersgate, and our church has been full of energy, laughter, music, crafts, games, snacks, and the beautiful holy chaos that only Vacation Bible School can bring.

This year, we are at Hero Central, and it has been so much fun watching our children lean into the stories, songs, and imagination of the week. There is something wonderful about capes, heroes, and the idea that someone ordinary might be called into something extraordinary.

Of course, comic book superheroes usually come with impressive powers.

Super strength.
Invisibility.
Elasticity.
The ability to fly.
Or, at the very least, a very dramatic costume and theme music.

Most of us do not feel like we have those kinds of powers. We do not wake up in the morning feeling invincible. Some days, we are just proud we found both shoes and remembered where we put our wallet.

But one of the gifts of VBS this week has been the reminder that, in Christ, we have been given something far more life-changing than comic book superpowers. We have been given the power of the Holy Spirit.

And the power of the Holy Spirit does not always look flashy. It may not come with a cape or a spotlight. Often, it looks like kindness when someone feels alone. Courage when doing the right thing is hard. Compassion when someone is hurting. Forgiveness when resentment would be easier. Hope when the world feels heavy.

It looks like people showing up. It looks like volunteers giving their time, energy, and love so children can know they are welcomed, respected, valued, and loved. It looks like youth preparing to spend a week serving through UMARMY, repairing homes, building relationships, and reminding neighbors in Duncanville that they are not forgotten.

It looks like the people of Aldersgate being the church.

Sometimes we discount our role because we do not think of ourselves as heroic. We know our weaknesses too well. We know our doubts, our limits, our tired places, and all the ways we feel ordinary. But God has always had a way of working through ordinary people.

In Jesus Christ, we have received God’s amazing grace. And by the power of the Holy Spirit, that grace can move through us in ways that change lives. Not because we are superheroes. Because we are loved, called, gifted, and sent.

This Sunday, I hope you will join us for VBS Sunday as we celebrate all God has done this week. We will also commission our youth mission trip team as they prepare to serve with UMARMY in Duncanville next week.

Come ready to celebrate, pray, encourage, and remember this good news: You may not have a cape. But in Christ, you have been given grace.

And grace is more powerful than we often realize.

With Gratitude,
