Marked By Love
After seven weeks of renewal leave, I came home to Aldersgate and immediately remembered what I’d missed most: you.
Walking into church Sunday morning was like a breath of fresh air. I loved getting to visit—even if just for a few minutes—with many of you. I missed the community, the shared care, the way this church walks through life together. While my renewal time was filled with rest, travel, and quiet reflection, I was reminded again and again how essential it is to step back and take Sabbath. Not just for rest’s sake—but so I can see and hear God more clearly.
One of the stories that spoke deeply to me during my time away was the journey of Moses—how God met him in wilderness spaces and reshaped his purpose. I hope to share more about that in a future series, but for now, let me just say: I return not just rested, but renewed. And I’m ready to walk with you into this new season.
This Sunday we begin a new sermon series called A Caring Church, rooted in John 13:34–35. In this passage, Jesus tells his disciples:
“Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
That word—love—isn’t just a feeling. It’s a way of living. Over 50 times in the New Testament we are told to do something for one another. That’s how people know we belong to Jesus—not by what we say we believe, but by the way we love.
So, here’s my invitation as we begin this new school year and this new season together: Be present for someone this week—especially a teacher, staff member, or student. Send a note. Make a call. Say a prayer. Show up.
Let our educators, students, and school staff know they are seen, they are not alone, and that this church stands with them. Because that is what a caring church looks like. Being present with those who do so much.
And I’m so glad to be back, walking into this season with you.
With renewed love,
Rev. Rodney Whitfield
